In order for water to be characterized as “bottled water” it must meet all applicable federal and state standards. Bottled water cannot contain sweeteners or chemical additives and must be calorie-free and sugar-free. Bottled water may be sodium-free or must contain low amounts of sodium. Some bottled waters may contain natural or added carbonation.

•  Artesian Water or Artesian well water is bottled water from a well that is connected to a confined aquifier where the water level is above the top of the aquifier.

•  Drinking water is another name for bottled water. Drinking water has the same specifications as bottled water.

•  Distilled water is produced through distillation. This process involves heating water to its boiling point, capturing and then condensing the pure steam to form pure distilled water.

•  Mineral water is natural, underground or artesian water that is characterized by a constant level of minerals and trace elements. The United States requires the water to have a minimum level of 250 parts-per-million in order to be classified as mineral water. No minerals can be added to this type of bottled water.

•  Purified water is surface or underground water that has been treated for human consumption. The water then enters a reverse-osmosis and/or deionization filtration system that strips the water of all the minerals and chemicals.

•  Sparkling water is bottled water that contains carbon dioxide.

•  Spring water is derived from an underground formation where water flows naturally to the Earth’s surface. Spring water collected with the use of an external force must be from the same underground stratum as the spring and must have all the physical properties, before treatment, and be of the same composition and quality as the water that flows naturally to the surface of the earth. Spring water must be collected only at the spring or through a borehole tapping the underground formation finding the spring.
